House Regulations

Greygarth seeks to foster optimum conditions for serious study within a Christian family atmosphere where human and personal values are encouraged. Each student’s academic progress may thus be accompanied by his personal development, a wider range of interests and a deeper understanding and concern for others. In selecting prospective residents every effort is made to ensure that they understand the specific function which Greygarth seeks to fulfil as a background to their University studies. The Regulations at Greygarth are designed to facilitate these purposes.

Regulations

    1.  Residents are expected to observe the timetable of the hall, enclosed. The front door is closed at
midnight. In the case of exceptionally late entry, as well as absence from meals, the Warden should
      be previously informed.
    2. Rooms must be vacated by 11.00 AM. before the domestic staff goes to clean them. If someone is ill
and has to stay in bed he should ensure that the Warden is informed at breakfasttime so that he can
      receive proper attention.
    3. All communication with the domestic staff should be made through the Warden.
    4. Students from outside are welcome to activities in the Hall and the common rooms during the daytime.
Female friends may be received only in the visitors’ room during the daytime. The Warden is pleased
to receive the parents and families of residents.
    5. Everyone is asked to cooperate in maintaining the atmosphere of order and study in the Hall. To this
end, speakers and laptops that residents may use in their rooms should not be audible in other rooms
since this may annoy or distract other residents.
    6. Cooking in bedrooms is not permitted. Residents are not permitted to have meals in their rooms to
maintain cleanliness and uphold communal dining standards. Light snacks and beverages (soft
drinks) are allowed in their rooms. Residents are responsible for disposing of any waste in designated
      bins.
    7. A proper standard of personal attire is expected in the residence, especially in the chapel, dining
rooms and other common rooms. This includes long trousers and shoes during dinner time.
    8. Permission should be sought from the Warden before any alcoholic drink is taken to the library or
common rooms. Arrangements should be made with the Warden for holding any communal
      activities.
    9. Residents are expected to respect the standards of the Hall and to realise that certain programmes or
publications, whether due to their cynicism, crudity, vulgarity or low tone, conflict with these
standards and cannot be imposed on the Hall.
    10. All are expected to take care of the Hall and its decorations. The decoration of the rooms may only be
altered with the previous approval of the Secretary (this includes fixing posters, etc. to the walls).
Each resident will be held personally responsible for any damage, over and above reasonable wear
and tear, done to furniture, fitting, walls, carpets, etc. in his room, or by him in the common rooms.
Suitcases should be clearly labelled and stored in the luggage loft.
    11. There are no compulsory activities at Greygarth. It is understood, however, that students come to this
Hall rather than elsewhere because they are drawn by the features it has to offer, and that they wish
not only to benefit from them but also, so far as is possible, to contribute to them. For this reason,
dinner, the daily get-togethers and the House Jobs are considered important in the Hall.
    12. Bed linen, towels and table napkins are provided and laundered by the Hall.
    13. No insurance cover is provided for the personal belongings of student residents in Greygarth.
They may, of course, take out a personal policy if they wish.
