Greygarth started in 1962. The Hall was founded not merely as a provider of good accommodation to students but also, indeed primarily, as an essential complement to their studies. This is why the Hall provides a friendly, family atmosphere, good study facilities and a large variety of cultural and social activities. It is through these activities that the benefits of the Hall are spread to a much larger population than its resident community would suggest.
So far, over 1000 students have been resident and 1000's more (students, young people and old) have benefited from its activities: spiritual (entrusted to Opus Dei, a prelature of the Catholic Church), cultural, academic, sporting and leisure. Its programme of social activities includes a Saturday Club for boys and regular visits to the aged.
Without doubt, the most successful of the social projects has been ReachOut!, the mentoring charity which started at the Hall in 1994 and today manages over 200 mentors to young people in the most deprived areas of Manchester.
The hall is the main undertaking of Greygarth Association, a registered charity (no 1179826).
We want to build an outreach centre capable of meeting the demands of the increasing external activity: training rooms, youth club facilities, etc. We want to improve the accommodation offered in line with the changing needs of the student population, and expand what we offer. The new works will consist of:
